Julia Ducournau Returns with a Haunting Body Horror Drama

Julia Ducournau, the visionary behind Raw and Titane, unveils her latest cinematic tour de force: Alpha (2025), a gripping body horror drama starring Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani, Mélissa Boros, Emma Mackey, Finnegan Oldfield, and Louai El Amrousy.

The film follows 13-year-old Alpha, a rebellious teen navigating life with her drug-addicted uncle and her mother, a nurse tending to patients with a deadly, stone-inducing blood disease. When a schoolyard tattoo sparks fear she’s infected, Alpha’s fragile world spirals into chaos.

Premiering in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 19, Alpha was nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Released theatrically in France by Diaphana Distribution on August 20, 2025, the film marks Ducournau’s boldest, most emotionally charged exploration of adolescence, illness, and the human body yet, showcasing intense, unforgettable performances from Tahar Rahim and young Mélissa Boros.
