Bulk
Ben Wheatley, the mischievous and genre‑bending filmmaker behind Kill List, Sightseers, and In the Earth, returns with BULK, an audacious, experimental sci‑fi thriller that pushes form, technology, and storytelling into exhilarating new territory.
At the centre of BULK is oligarch and tech visionary Anton Chambers, whose radical experiment in string theory — known as the “Brain Collider” — has gone catastrophically wrong. Chambers has vanished without a trace, and world‑weary journalist Corey Harlan is forcibly recruited to track him down. Guided by the enigmatic and glamorous inter‑dimensional traveller Aclima, Corey is pulled into a reality‑bending investigation that spirals far beyond anything he could have imagined.
Written and directed by Wheatley, the film is produced by Andy Starke of Rook Films and financed by Film4, with Ollie Madden and David Kimbangi serving as executive producers. True to Wheatley’s restless creativity, BULK was shot using an eclectic mix of camcorders, iPhones, GoPros and SVHS, embracing a raw, handmade aesthetic. Wheatley also crafted the film’s physical models — including helicopters and aeroplanes — and personally wrote the on‑screen credits, underscoring the project’s fiercely independent spirit.
The cast features Sam Riley, Alexandra Maria Lara, Mark Monero, and Noah Taylor, each bringing a distinctive energy to Wheatley’s inter‑dimensional mystery. Speaking on the Empire Film Podcast, Riley revealed that the film was shot over an intense two‑week period in a house in Brighton, with all dialogue later recorded post‑sync in Berlin due to the tight constraints of the location.
BULK stands as a bold new entry in Wheatley’s filmography — a playful, provocative, and unpredictable journey through fractured realities and the limits of human perception.
