For decades, snake-hipped, long-haired, wizard-bearded multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis has captivated audiences with The Dirty Three, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and his acclaimed film scores for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road, and I’m Still Here.
But beyond the stage and the screen, Ellis has devoted himself to a very different passion: a wildlife sanctuary in the forests of Sumatra. Ellis Park, directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, The Order), offers an intimate portrait of Ellis away from the limelight, working with conservationist Femke den Haas and her dedicated team to rescue and rehabilitate trafficked and mistreated animals.
Marking Kurzel’s first documentary, Ellis Park is a deeply personal exploration of solidarity with all creatures of the world, and a remarkable departure for both filmmaker and subject.
