Hedda

Acclaimed filmmaker Nia DaCosta brings Henrik Ibsen’s classic Hedda Gabler to vivid new life in her 2025 drama, Hedda. Written and directed by DaCosta, the film stars Tessa Thompson in the title role, who also serves as producer. Joining Thompson are Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock, and Nina Hoss in a stellar supporting cast.

The film made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2025, before opening in select U.S. theaters on October 22, 2025. Audiences worldwide can stream the film exclusively on Amazon Prime Video beginning October 29, 2025.

Set in 1950s England, the story follows Hedda Gabler, newly married to academic George Tesman. Their honeymoon celebration takes a dramatic turn when an unexpected guest arrives, igniting a night of passion, betrayal, and long-repressed desires. Hedda is torn between the ache of a past love and the suffocation of her present life, unraveling in a spiral that ensnares everyone around her.

With its stylish wit and modern sensibility, DaCosta’s adaptation delivers a bold, entertaining reimagining of Ibsen’s 1891 masterpiece for contemporary audiences.
