Sound of Falling

A multigenerational portrait of memory, trauma, and resilience

Sound of Falling is a sweeping, time‑bending drama that traces the emotional inheritance carried by four generations of women living in a farmhouse on the banks of the Elbe. Moving between the early 20th century, the 1940s, the 1980s, and the present day, the film follows Alma, Erika, Angelika, and Lenka as their lives echo, overlap, and ultimately dissolve into one another.

The film’s structure allows time to flow both forwards and backwards, revealing how personal histories are shaped by national trauma, war, and the quiet ruptures of everyday life. As the narrative unfolds, the audience witnesses the joys, violence, and upheavals that define each woman’s world, gradually forming a complete and haunting portrait of a family marked by Germany’s turbulent past.

A major success in Germany and a prize‑winner at Cannes, Sound of Falling has been celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship, emotional depth, and its ability to capture the lingering impact of conflict across generations. Its lyrical storytelling and atmospheric visual style create a cinematic experience that is both intimate and epic in scope.

A special introduction will accompany the screening on 9 March at 1:30 pm, presented in partnership with the u3a movement, which brings retired and semi‑retired people together through shared cultural and learning experiences.
