The History of Sound
MUBI proudly presents The History of Sound, a sweeping 2025 period romance drama directed by Oliver Hermanus and written by Ben Shattuck, adapted from his acclaimed short stories The History of Sound and Origin Stories. Set against the shifting landscape of early 20th‑century America, the film follows Lionel (Paul Mescal), a collector of folk songs, and David (Josh O’Connor), a gifted singer, whose shared devotion to music sparks a profound connection.
Meeting in 1917 at the New England Conservatory of Music, the two men embark on a journey through rural Maine in the winter of 1920, recording the voices and stories of everyday Americans. As their bond deepens into romance, the looming shadow of war pulls them apart — David to Europe to fight, Lionel back to Kentucky. Years later, their reunion reveals how time has changed them, yet their love and reverence for the power of sound remain unbroken.
Beautifully photographed and performed, The History of Sound explores community, memory, and the intimate act of listening. The film made its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, where it was nominated for the Palme d’Or, before its U.S. release by MUBI on September 12.
