Michael Sheen Unveiled as Owain Glyndŵr in New Play Owain & Henry

The first image and audio of acclaimed actor Michael Sheen in the role of Owain Glyndŵr have been released today, 16 September, to coincide with the annual day commemorating the legendary Welsh prince.

On this date in 1400, Glyndŵr was declared Prince of Wales by his supporters, sparking a 15-year rebellion against King Henry IV of England. This pivotal chapter of Welsh history will be reimagined in Owain & Henry, a new play by Gary Owen, premiering in November 2026.

The newly shared photograph, taken by Kirsten McTernan, presents Sheen in character as Glyndŵr. Alongside this, an audio clip released on social media features Sheen, also Artistic Director of the Welsh National Theatre, voicing Glyndŵr for the first time. In his speech, he reflects on the many peoples who have called the island home and the enduring struggle to preserve the Welsh language and identity.
